Goals from Bacary Sagna and Cesc Fabregas in either half proved decisive as Arsenal held off an Everton fightback to claim second place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win.Sagna opened the scoring after 35 minutes at Goodison Park with a ferocious strike from a tight angle and Fabregas doubled the lead early into the second half.
Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh wasted some glorious chances to add to the lead but Everton produced a thrilling finish and deservedly pulled one back through Tim Cahill late on. The Gunners also had Lukasz Fabianksi to thank for their three points, the goalkeeper having produced some fine saves to deny Jermaine Beckford, Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha. Jack Rodwell also blazed a fine chance over as Everton fought hard not to surrender their seven-match unbeaten run.

Sunderland denied Chelsea the chance to stretch the lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Nedum Onuoha, Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck were on the score-sheet as Chelsea suffered their first home defeat since March and their first at the hands of Sunderland since 2001.
The visitors stunned Carlo Ancelotti’s side on the stroke of half-time when Onuoha blasted his way through the home defence to score. Gyan added the second just after half-time with a cool finish and Welbeck seized on a poor backpass by Ashley Cole in the 87th minute to hand Chelsea their second defeat in three games.

Lionel Messi struck a brace as Barcelona overcame a controversial decision to beat Villarreal 3-1 at the Nou Camp and move provisionally above fierce rivals Real Madrid who play Sporting Gijon on Sunday – at the top of the Primera Division table after 11 matches. David Villa gave the Catalans the lead after 22 minutes and Pedro thought he had made it two shortly afterwards, but saw his effort ruled out by what looked to be an error.
Nilmar then levelled for Villarreal as the Nou Camp continued to jeer the officials. But as he has done so often in the past, Messi came to the rescue with a brilliant goal after 59 minutes and the Argentinian wrapped up the points with a contentious second late on.

When it seemed that Roy Hodgson’s men have finally found winning ways, their recent revival slumped in dismal fashion as they lost 2-0 to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. A six-match unbeaten run came to end as they were outfought, outplayed and out manned by Tony Pulis’ side.
Ricardo Fuller opened the scoring just after half-time and Kenwyne Jones completed a comprehensive victory in the final minute before Lucas Leiva was sent off for a second yellow card. The Potters more than deserved their win against a team who appear to have lost their way as quickly as they found it. Liverpool have won away from home only once this season and only three times since last November.
