Manchester City vs Hamburg SV Highlights: UEFA Cup

Manchester City rediscovered much needed winning mentality but it was Hamburg who secured a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, progressing 4-3 on aggregate despite City’s 2-1 win on the night.

After being 3-1 down from the first leg the last thing manager Mark Hughes wanted was for his side to concede an early goal. But that’s exactly what happened and Hamburg extended their lead after just 11 minutes into the game.

City’s defense failed to deal with a routine cross from Jonathan Pitroipa and Paolo Guerrero took full advantage to score from close range.

However they battled back and goals from Elano with a penalty and Felipe Caicedo gave them hope.

But City were left cursing their luck as Elano twice had superb free-kicks denied by the woodwork.

To pile on City’s misery skipper Richard Dunne was sent off in the second half.

Dynamo Kiev vs Paris Saint-Germain Highlights :UEFA Cup

Dynamo Kiev benefited from two goalkeeping erors by Mickael Landreau to ease past Paris St Germain 3-0 and qualify for the UEFA Cup semi-finals.

The tie was well-poised after last week’s goalless first leg at the Parc des Princes but PSG were no match for Dynamo tonight, although the French side were not helped by a couple of costly clangers by Landreau.

Ismael Bangoura put the hosts in th lead in the fourth minute and Landreau punched the ball into his own net soon after to leave PSG with a mountain to climb.

Worse was to come for the 11-times-capped France custodian, who spilled a free-kick to allow Ognjen Vukojevic to slot home Dynamo’s third and final goal just after the hour mark.

The Ukrainian league leaders progress to the last four where they will meet either Marseille or compatriots Shakhtar Donetsk.

Werder Bremen vs Udinese Highlights

Werder Bremen took a small step towards the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup with a 3-1 win over Udinese at home.

It could have been a perfect evening for the Bundesliga side as two goals from Diego and one from Hugo Almeida put them firmly in control of the tie, but a Fabio Quagliarella strike three minutes from the end gives Udinese a ray of hope for the second leg.

The away goal gives the Bianconeri a glimmer of hope for the return at the Stadio Friuli next Thursday and leaves Udinese with all to play for in front of their own fans next week.

Hamburg SV vs Manchester City Highlights

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes saw his side make a stunning start in the UEFA Cup quarter-final only to throw away the lead in the end at the Nordbank Arena.

Stephen Ireland’s opener after only 35 seconds only prompted an onslaught from Hamburg, who will take a two-goal advantage into the return leg at Eastlands next week.

City’s hopes of progress are hanging by a thread and require a superb performance back home after another dismal away day despite a superb display by goalkeeper Shay Given.

Manchester sity have secured just eight points from a possible 48 away from home in the Premier League.

Yet they could not have wished for a better beginning to the game. Ireland started and finished the move, picking out Robinho pass.
