Liverpool’s Champions League hopes took a mighty blow as Fiorentina claimed an impressive victory in a delirious Stadio Artemio Franchi. This was Liverpool’s first away defeat in Europe since the semi-final defeat at Chelsea in April 2008, and only their ninth away reverse in 38 attempts in the competition under boss Rafael Benitez. Montenegro international Stevan Jovetic did most of the damage with a quick-fire double inside 10 minutes. Liverpool had no answer to the 19-year-old’s drive and pace, and their Group E future is now under immense threat. Liverpool did not manage a shot on target in a disappointing first period and although they fought back after the break, Fiorentina were never going to let a prized victory escape their grasp.

Fiorentina vs Siena Highlights: Serie A Highlights

Fiorentina marginally overcame an organised Siena 1-0 in this afternoon’s Tuscan derby.

The game had looked to be heading for a draw with Fiorentina unable to break down the visitors’ solid defense but Adrian Mutu found a way through with less than 20 minutes left for the Champions League hopefuls.

Inter Milan restored their seven-point lead at the top with a somewhat lucky win over Fiorentina at the San Siro.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a dubious goal in the 11th minute, but there was no doubt about his second deep into stoppage time which sealed the victory and took Inter back seven points clear of Juventus at the top of Serie A.

Inter once again had their stopper Julio Cesar to thank as he made a string of magnificent saves to deny the Viola, whose hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season were dented.
