Italy, still recovering from their embarrassing Confederations Cup display in June, were foiled by goalkeeper Diego Benaglio in a 0-0 draw with Switzerland in Wednesday’s friendly.

Benaglio helped Ottmar Hitzfeld’s team extend their unbeaten run to seven games while skipper Fabio Cannavaro made a record-breaking 127th appearance for Italy, overtaking Paolo Maldini.

Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat by Espanyol on Sunday in a game which marked the unveiling of the Spanish side’s new stadium.

The Reds fielded a strong team at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat in Barcelona, with Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso coming off the bench with six minutes remaining in the match.
