Manchester United vs West Ham Highlights: EPL

Fabio Capello should have heaved a sigh of relief as Rooney managed to score his first goal since March and Manchester United kept the pressure on both Arsenal and Chelsea at top as they beat West Ham 3-0.

Rooney netted from the spot in the first half after Jonathan Spector’s poorly timed tackle on Ryan Giggs. While Nani was nowhere to be seen for the spot-kick after last weeks miss, the Portuguese winger cut inside brilliantly to fire United’s second, before Dimitar Berbatov’s maintained his goal scoring streak with an agile finish from his cross sealed the points.

Dimitar Berbatov repaid the faith of his manager by sending Manchester United on their way to a comfortable season-opening Premier League win over Newcastle, but it was legendary pair of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs who stole the show.

Berbatov was handed a starting berth alongside Wayne Rooney and responded by firing home an excellent 33rd-minute effort at Old Trafford.

The Bulgarian should have had another goal after half-time but, after Darren Fletcher had doubled the Red Devils’ advantage shortly before the break, it was ageless substitute Giggs who extended his remarkable record of scoring in every Premier League season when he latched on to Scholes’ inspired pass and sent a first-time volley bouncing past Steve Harper.

It was part of another masterclass from man-of-the-match Scholes, who with every game must make Fabio Capello repent at his failure to lure the 35-year-old out of international retirement for World Cup duty in the summer.

The only real disappointment for United was another blank day for Wayne Rooney, who has now gone 13 matches for club and country since he last scored, against Bayern Munich in March.
Questions will continue to be raised of Rooney until he starts to show the form that established himself as one of the world’s leading players last season.

Didier Drogba’s controversial goal allowed Chelsea to shrug Manchester United aside and put themselves at the top of the EPL standings.

Sir Alex Ferguson and his team will feel hard done by as Drogba was clearly offside as he collected Salomon Kalou’s pass and fired home 12 minutes from time.

The significance of the error only became clear once Federico Macheda had pulled a goal back for the Red devils to set up a pulsating finish.

But Ferguson would realise that the first hour had been completely one-sided in Chelsea’s favor and that the visitors should have had a greater advantage than the one goal Joe Cole provided in the first half.

Without Wayne Rooney,United’s attack lacked bite. And although the 34-goal striker is only out for a fortnight, by the time he returns his side’s dreams of glory might be over, considering Chelsea enjoy a two-point advantage and a superior goal difference.

Ivica Olic applied the cool finish for Bayern’s winner after robbing Evra of possession in the box, and at that moment United medical staff instantly ran to Rooney, who appeared to land awkwardly on his right ankle after trying to avoid having his left foot trodden on by Mario Gomez.

Rooney had earlier increased his goal tally to 34, before deflecting Franck Ribery’s free-kick past Edwin van der Sar 13 minutes from time.

The initial fear was that it was another of those dreaded metatarsal injuries and while that did not seem to be the problem on closer inspection, any injury lay-off at this stage of the season will be bad news in particular for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
