Liverpool vs Blackpool Highlights: EPL

Liverpool’s much debated issues off the pitch have been eclipsed by their problems on it as the side slumped to an shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Premier League newcomers Blackpool. Thousands of fans staged a pre-match protest march against the continuing ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett but there was a real danger of revolt from the Liverpool faithful inside Anfield at the final whistle.

Charlie Adam’s penalty and Luke Varney’s perfectly-timed strike did the damage in the first half and although Sotirios Kyrgiakos’s header pulled one back, Liverpool will spend the next fortnight rooted in the bottom three because of the forthcoming international break.

FC Utrecht vs Liverpool Highlights: Europa League

Liverpool escaped with a point in a goalless draw in their Europa League Group K clash in Utrecht after another disjointed and disappointing performance. Without their inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard, left behind to rest on Merseyside, the Reds looked devoid of ideas and even the presence of out of form Fernando Torres for his first Europa League start of the campaign did not help.

A point in the Stadion Galgenwaard, where the hosts had won their previous six matches, was no less feat but it was hardly one of those classic, gritty away performances in Europe.

Roy Hodgson’s side, who had five successive Europa League victories prior to this game, were dominated for long periods and their clean sheet should be credited to goalkeeper Jose Reina and a goalline clearance from Raul Meireles.

Liverpool have now gone four matches without a victory in all competitions and Hodgson’s blueprint for reinforcing the team after Rafael Benitez’s shock departure in the summer still looks very much like a work in progress.

Liverpool vs Sunderland Highlights: EPL Highlights

Reds manager Roy Hodgson has to thank Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who once again came to his side’s rescue but it was referee Stuart Attwell erratic display which caught the attention in Sunderland’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The official, who had previously awarded the infamous “ghost goal” in the Championship, allowed Dirk Kuyt’s opening strike to count after ruling Michael Turner had taken a free-kick when he appeared to roll it back to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Darren Bent hit back with a penalty and a header either side of half-time, but Gerrard nodded in Fernando Torres’ near-post cross to salvage a point.

Birmingham vs Liverpool Highlights: EPL Highlights

Liverpool were indebted to a superb display from goalkeeper Pepe Reina for earning a valuable point against Birmingham in a goalless Premier League clash at St Andrew’s.
Reina produced excellent reflex saves to keep out point-blank headers from Cameron Jerome and Craig Gardner in the first-half and the home side were also left to regret a handful of clear-cut chances.

Birmingham were the more impressive of the two sides and looking at his side perform, new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has plenty of work to do to make the Merseysiders finish in the top four leave alone them contending for the tittle.
