Their unbeaten home stretch was extended to 30 games as Sami Hyypia bid a tearful farewell to Anfield after 10 successful years at the club.

The ovations were for the veteran Finn and a Liverpool side who had battled Manchester United all the way in the title race.

The goals came from Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and an own goal from Alan Hutton, with Robbie Keane pulling one back for Spurs on his return to Anfield.

Spurs, even though Fulham lost at home, failed to take advantage and will not be in the Europa League next season.

Steven Gerrard scored twice against West Ham as Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 win to move top of the Premier League and keep their simmering title hopes alive.

With Manchester United playing on Sunday, Rafael Benitez’s men overtook them on goal difference but time has almost run out and they only have two matches left.

United have four games and may not need them all to secure the title, although the efforts of Gerrard has at least stretched the tittle race well into May.

The 28-year-old’s goals at Upton Park took his tally to 23 for the season, with Ryan Babel adding a late third to seal the win.

Newcastle were tormented by a Liverpool side that kept their own title dreams alive and maintained pressure on leaders Manchester United.

Liverpool scored in the first-half through Yossi Benayoun and Dirk Kuyt, with substitute Lucas heading the last one in the final minutes.

Newcastle’s misery was compounded by having Joey Barton sent off in the second-half for a crude foul on Xabi Alonso and made Newcastle’s relegation battle even more harder.

Hull City vs Liverpool Highlights: EPL

Dirk Kuyt struck twiceto keep Liverpool’s tittle chances alive and ground out a crucial 3-1 Barclays Premier League victory at Hull.

The Reds were rigorously tested by the relegation-threatened Tigers, who were reduced to 10 men, but the Red’s held on to keep the pressure on Manchester United at the top of the table.

Kuyt put Liverpool 2-0 ahead after a controversial Xabi Alonso strike in the first half but Hull battled hard and pulled one back through Geovanni after Caleb Folan was sent off.

But Kuyt finished off the fixture in the closing minutes from close range.

Liverpool, perhaps feeling the pace after Tuesday’s thrilling 4-4 draw with Arsenal, were second best for large periods.

Hull sensed they had nothing to lose but their performance should at least offer some encouragement for their remaining four games.

Highlights:
