Stoke City vs Liverpool Highlights: EPL Highlights

When it seemed that Roy Hodgson’s men have finally found winning ways, their recent revival slumped in dismal fashion as they lost 2-0 to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. A six-match unbeaten run came to end as they were outfought, outplayed and out manned by Tony Pulis’ side.

Ricardo Fuller opened the scoring just after half-time and Kenwyne Jones completed a comprehensive victory in the final minute before Lucas Leiva was sent off for a second yellow card. The Potters more than deserved their win against a team who appear to have lost their way as quickly as they found it. Liverpool have won away from home only once this season and only three times since last November.

Wigan Athletic vs Liverpool Highlights: EPL Highlights

Liverpool’s four-match winning run was halted by a lively Wigan at the DW Stadium as Roy Hodgson’s side failed to secure all three points despite taking an early lead through Fernando Torres’ third goal in four days, the visitors lost their grip on the game midway through the first half and never regained it.

Wigan equalised through Hugo Rodallega in the 52nd minute and finished the better side as the Merseysiders appeared to feel the exertions of beating Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. That will be a concern to manager Hodgson, who has voiced his concerns about the depth of quality in his squad, with a trip to Stoke next up on Saturday.

The draw meant Liverpool missed the chance to move into the top five a scenario which seemed a distant prospect just a few weeks ago with the Reds buried in the relegation zone until they put together three league wins.

Liverpool vs Blackburn Rovers Highlights: EPL Highlights

Striker Fernando Torres ended his six-match goal drought with the winner against Blackburn to provide a boost and much needed hope for the new owners at Anfield. Goalkeeper Paul Robinson had kept the Reds at bay until Sotirios Kyrgiakos’ 48th-minute header and although a Jamie Carragher own goal quickly levelled things up Torres struck only his second of the season soon to secure all three points for Liverpool. It ended a run of seven matches without a victory in all competitions and although it was still not enough to lift Liverpool out of the bottom three the result came as a welcome relief and will restore much needed confidence in the squad.

Everton vs Liverpool Highlights: EPL Highlights

Liverpool’s new owners were left with no doubt about the task at hand as Everton emerged with a 2-0 victory from the 214th Merseyside derby. John Henry, head of New England Sports Ventures, was present at Goodison Park to witness first-hand a fiery encounter which Everton dominated for long periods and deservedly won. Goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta did the damage either side of half-time as the visitors were out-played and out-fought by the home side.

The defeat left Liverpool stuck in 18th place in the Premier League, with only a solitary victory over West Brom in eight games this season. And their worst start to a season since 1953-54 when they were relegated, undoubtedly got worse with defeat against a team who were only a place above them before the start of play. One thing is certain and that is the new American owners, who invested heavily in the Boston Red Sox when they acquired the baseball team in 2001 prior to two World Series wins, will have to cough up enough funds for manager Roy Hodgson to strengthen in January. All the focus, as it had been for the preceding week, will be on Liverpool’s failure but Everton were worthy winners, ending a run of three successive derby defeats.
