Wayne Rooney might be away on his 25th birthday, but the news of his new contract created some positive buzz at the Britannia Stadium as Manchester United’s faltering Premier League title challenge stuttered back into life. Rooney was persuaded this week that Sir Alex Ferguson’s men remain the team to beat, but an extraordinary few days at Old Trafford looked set for a miserable slump when Stoke substitute Tuncay hit a sublime 82nd-minute equaliser to cancel out Javier Hernandez’s first-half header. However, summer acquisition Hernandez found enough time to sweep in a stunning late winner which ended a long wait for an away league victory and closed the gap on leaders Chelsea to five points.

Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner were on score sheet as Arsenal struck a blow for the old guard against 10-man Manchester City, triumphing 3-0 at Eastlands. City had been looking to reclaim second place in the Premier League but hopes of a fifth successive win against a team which they were supposed beat comfortably, give there recent form were all but dashed with the early sending off of Dedryck Boyata.

Nasri put the Gunners ahead 20 minutes into a fiery contest and although Joe Hart’s heroics kept City in contention with a penalty save from Cesc Fabregas, Song and Bendtner killed the tie off. Victory lifted Arsenal back into the top four, above City on goal difference, and contradicted recent criticism of the Londoners’ record against their so-called title rivals.

Barcelona vs FC Copenhagen Highlights: UEFA Champions League

Lionel Messi struck two goals in each half as Barcelona climbed to the top of Group D after squeezing past erstwhile leaders FC Copenhagen at the Nou Camp. Messi broke the deadlock with a thunderous effort in the 19th minute to cap a fine opening from Barca, but the hosts struggled to finish off their in-form opponents and survived a number of second-half scares before the Argentinian ace tapped home from close range in stoppage time to secure the vital points. The victory lifts Barca onto seven points, one above Copenhagen and five clear of third-placed Rubin Kazan.

Rangers vs Valencia Highlights: Champions League

Maurice Edu had the dubious honour of being the lone scorer for both clubs as Rangers were held to a draw by Valencia in the Champions League. The Ibrox side would probably have settled for a point ahead of this meeting with the Spanish League high-fliers before the United States international handed them a first half lead. But a dream night turned into a nightmare for Edu when he inadvertently headed into his own net just a minute into the second half to allow the visitors to return to Spain with a share of the points, before both teams meet again early next month.
