Manchester United vs Newcastle United Highlights: EPL highlights

Dimitar Berbatov repaid the faith of his manager by sending Manchester United on their way to a comfortable season-opening Premier League win over Newcastle, but it was legendary pair of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs who stole the show.

Berbatov was handed a starting berth alongside Wayne Rooney and responded by firing home an excellent 33rd-minute effort at Old Trafford.

The Bulgarian should have had another goal after half-time but, after Darren Fletcher had doubled the Red Devils’ advantage shortly before the break, it was ageless substitute Giggs who extended his remarkable record of scoring in every Premier League season when he latched on to Scholes’ inspired pass and sent a first-time volley bouncing past Steve Harper.

It was part of another masterclass from man-of-the-match Scholes, who with every game must make Fabio Capello repent at his failure to lure the 35-year-old out of international retirement for World Cup duty in the summer.

The only real disappointment for United was another blank day for Wayne Rooney, who has now gone 13 matches for club and country since he last scored, against Bayern Munich in March.
Questions will continue to be raised of Rooney until he starts to show the form that established himself as one of the world’s leading players last season.

Liverpool vs Arsenal Highlights: EPL Highlights

Jose Reina’s gifted a howler, which enabled Arsenal to snatch a draw from a thrilling Premier League opener at 10-man Liverpool.

The Liverpool goalkeeper failed to control the rebound after Marouane Chamakh had hit the post in the final minute at Anfield to cancel out a David Ngog strike.

The goal was reward for a late spell of Arsenal pressure but it was unfortunate for Liverpool, who had survived most of the second half unscathed after the sending off of Joe Cole.

The big name summer signing from Chelsea was dismissed on his league debut for a reckless challenge on Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.

Koscielny himself also received a red card, but not until moments before the final whistle when he earned a harsh second booking for handball.

The equaliser denied Liverpool what would have been only their fourth victory over the Gunners in their last 19 league meetings. It remains to be seen how much the new wave of optimism which has swept into the club since Roy Hodgson was appointed as manager has been punctured due to this result.

Chelsea vs West Brom Highlights: EPL Highlights

Defending champions Chelsea fired an early warning to their Premier League title rivals as Didier Drogba smashed a hat-trick in their opening-day thrashing of new boys West Brom at Stamford Bridge.

Florent Malouda set the course after only six minutes, with Drogba’s free-kick extending the lead on the stroke of half-time.

It was more one-way traffic in the second half, as the Ivory Coast striker netted from close range with Frank Lampard making it 4-0 just after the hour.

Drogba’s deflected effort and a last-minute strike from Malouda sealed an emphatic win for the champions, who put last week’s 3-1 defeat by Manchester United in the Community Shield firmly behind them.

Despite being outplayed, West Brom and their manager Roberto Di Matteo, deserve credit for continuing to display some good passing football, but which tellingly lacked a cutting edge.
