Atletico Madrid almost scraped their way into the Europa League despite suffering a heavy home defeat to already-qualified Porto at a half-empty Vicente Calderon.

Atletico only needed to better or equal APOEL’s result away to Group winners Chelsea tonight to secure third place and assure themselves of European football again after Christmas.

And fortunately for Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, APOEL could only manage a draw at Stamford Bridge, which meant Atletico’s result tonight was immaterial.

That was pretty much the only good news of the evening for the Rojiblancos, though, as they slumped to a humiliating defeat after conceding twice inside the opening 14 minutes and then a third midway through the second half, with Bruno Alves, Falcao and Hulk on target.
