ARIEL ORTEGA’S flash of genius sunk Everton in a closely-contested friendly against Argentine giants River Plate in Canada.

Toffees trio Steven Pienaar, Jack Rodwell and Joseph Yobo played their first pre-season games, with Phil Neville, James Vaughan and Louis Saha on the bench.

Ortega surged through to flick a sublime 27th minute winner over Carlo Nash. Plate keeper Mario Vega kept out Everton strike pair Jo and Tim Cahill.
But Matias Abelairas twice went close for the Argentine gaints.

Everton’s triple substitution on 70 minutes nearly brought quick rewards  with Vaughan heading against a post, albeit the referee penalising a foul on the keeper.
Then frontman Vaughan seemed to be pushed in the area five minutes from time, but the referee was unconvinced.
