Racing Santander recorded a vital 2-0 victory at Sporting Gijon to drift apart six points from drop zone and move an inch closer to securing Primera Liga safety.

Nikola Zigic opened the scoring nine minutes into the second half and the visitors had to withstand some strong pressure mounted by sporting before sealing the three points right at the death thanks to substitute Gonzalo Colsa.

Things would have been different if Kike Mateo’s goal had not been harshly ruled out for offside 15 minutes from time.

The result sees Racing move six points clear of the relegation zone while Sporting are now just three points clear and in very real danger of going straight back to the drop zone.
