Ten-man Hamburg held their nerve to hold Hoffenheim and jumped to second place in the Bundesliga with an ugly but effective victory over Hoffenheim.

Jonathan Pitroipa scored the game’s only goal in the 28th minute, before Hamburg were forced to defend their lead in the final five minutes a man down after David Jarolim was shown his marching orders after second bookable offence.

Hamburg’s third straight victory put Martin Jol’s men level on points with leaders Wolfsburg and second only on goal difference.
