England vs Slovakia Highights: International Friendly Highlights

Wayne Rooney was the star to share top billing with record breaker David Beckham as England convincingly swept Slovakia aside at Wembley today.

Rooney capped an outstanding performance with his second-half brace, the first coming with a powerful header from a Beckham cross, the perfect way for the veteran midfielder to celebrate his 109th cap.

And, apart from a possible striker shortage, it was part of a fine day for Fabio Capello’s team, who really will be in the mood to party if they manage a repeat performance in Wednesday’s key World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

It is only relatively late in his career that Emile Heskey’s true worth has been appreciated. Michael Owen was fortunate to have his Liverpool team-mate playing alongside him as a strike partner for his country, that was when he scored many goals.
Now it is Rooney’s turn to profit from Heskey’s selfless industry, the battering ram who rips open doors for the craftsman. The priceless striker who does not score.

Russia vs Azerbaijan Highlights: World Cup qualifiers Highlights

Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko scored one and created another one as Guus Hiddink’s Russia recorded a eased past Azerbaijan 2-0 in Moscow.

The match was Hiddink’s first in charge of Russia since combining the role with that of Chelsea manager, and his side did well against the group minnows without ever really excelling.

The first half was an underwhelming spectacle, with Russia struggling to assert themselves and Azerbaijan unable to offer anything but a succession of wild and speculative long-range shots.

On the other Russia, after creating very few goal scoring chances went ahead with a Pavlyuchenko free-kick and later in the second half wrapped things when Pavlyuchenko beat Azerbaijan’s defense and fed a beautiful ball to Konstantin Zyryanov who doubled the lead.

Highlights:.

Russia 1-0 Azerbaijan

Russia 2-0 Azerbaijan

It was on April 15, 1989, that 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in a fenced-in standing area of the Sheffield stadium where Liverpool was playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semifinals.

As a tribute to the deceased Liverpool has never played a match since on the Hillsborough anniversary.

Watch this new music video recorded to raise awareness of the Hillsborough disaster – and starring ex-Reds Kenny Dalglish, John Aldridge, Phil Thompson, Bruce Grobbelaar and Alan Kennedy. Also featuring local bands and members of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, this newly created version of Kop favourite ‘Fields of Anfield Road’ – which includes an extra verse penned by LFC TV regular and Farm frontman Peter Hooton in tribute to the 96 – has been produced in remembrance of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough.
