Denmark cemented their lead at the top of Group one by cruising over Malta at the National Stadium, leaving the hosts still searching for their first goal of the campaign.

Soren Larsen opened the scoring for the Danes in the 12th minute before doubling his and his side’s tally 11 minutes later and substitute Morten Nordenstrand added a third to finish off the proceedings two minutes from time.

Denmark are level on points with Hungary at the top of the group but have a game in hand, while they have played two games less than third-placed Albania who currently have a point less than the top two.

Malta remain rock bottom with one point from five games.

John Toshack’s Wales youngsters were left heart broken by a home loss to Finland at the Millennium Stadium that leaves their World Cup dreams shattered.

This was the day when the bright, new generation of Welsh kids were taught a lesson by the 30-somethings of Finland, who in the end comfortably won this Group Four qualifier.

Old hands like Sami Hyypia and Jari Litmanen dominated the game. Litmanen created the first Finnish goal for another near veteran, former Charlton forward Jonatan Johansson, three minutes before the break.

And it was 33-year-old substitute Shefki Kuqi who grabbed the second a minute from the end to seal Wales’ fate.

Just what the mighty Germany will do to Wales’ boys on Wednesday in this same stadium is a worrying thought for Toshack.

Slovenia vs Czech Republic Highlights: World Cup Qaulifiers Highlights

Slovenia and Czech Republic shared the spoils in Maribor tonight after cancelling each other out in a tense World Cup Group Three qualifier.

The result ensured Northern Ireland – 3-2 winners against Poland at Windsor Park earlier today – finished the night atop the pool, a point clear of Slovakia and two ahead of Slovenia and the Czechs.

The visitors had few promising counter-attacks but were not able to really threaten Slovenia goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic.

Manager Nigel Worthington saw his side go top of Group Three after a rinspiring victory over Poland at Windsor Park.

It was just the result he was expecting for with Slovenia due to arrive in Belfast on Wednesday.

Poland, meanwhile, were left to rue their luck with Michal Zewlakow scoring a bizarre own goal.
