Salomon Kalou kept Chelsea’s title challenge alive with a second-half brace to leave Middlesbrough entrenched in the relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Kalou opened the scoring in the 58th minute and added a second blow 10 minutes from time as Chelsea moved second in the table, two points behind leaders Manchester United.

Middlesbrough have now gone 11 games without a win in the Barclays Premier League and this latest setback will only mount the pressure on boss Gareth Southgate.

Sunderland vs Fulham Highlights: EPL Highlights

Kenwyne Jones celebrated his new contract in style by scoring the only goal as Sunderland ended a run of four Premier League games without a win against Fulham.

The Trinidad and Tobago international, who signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier in the day, pounced on the loose ball after Mark Schwarzer had saved Djibril Cisse’s 55th-minute shot to edge a tight encounter.

Emile Heskey proved his £3.5million transfer fee to be a hit with a 20th-minute debut goal that took Aston Villa up to third in the Premier League with their latest smash-and-grab 1-0 success at Fratton Park.

Luckless Portsmouth, meanwhile, slipped deeper into the relegation battle just four days after losing their grip on the FA Cup, losing Nadir Belhadj to a red card in the process.

Martin O’Neill’s side are now level on points with second-placed Liverpool, who were at one stage linked with a transfer window move for former Red’s striker Heskey.

Tottenham recorded their first Premier League win in more than a month by defeating Stoke 3-1 with a burst of first-half goals at White Hart Lane.

The win for Harry Redknapp’s win was built on strikes in the first half by Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe’s third goal in four starts since rejoining Spurs and a header from Michael Dawson, before James Beattie pulled one back for the visitors in the second half

The hosts were helped by Luka Modric pulling the strings in central midfield, allowing Spurs to pick up their first three points since winning at West Ham at the start of last month.
