The Gunners handed the Blues the lead on 31 minutes when keeper Manuel Almunia collected a corner but threw the ball to Jose Bosingwa, who put in a great cross from the right which the unlucky Johan Djourou netting into his own goal.
But Flying Dutch man Van Persie equalised on 59 minutes when smashing a right-footed effort into the top right hand corner from the edge of the box, although replays showed it was off-side.
He then added a second just three minutes later to stun Stamford Bridge when latching onto a fine header down by Emmanuel Adebayor and hitting a great left footed effort on the turn into the bottom right hand corner past Petr Cech.
Chelsea remain top on goal difference from Liverpool but the Merseysiders still have a game in hand against West Ham on Monday night at home.
The victory helped Arsenal to move back into the top four and cut the gap between them and Chelsea to seven points putting them back in race for the title.
There was no hint of an Arsenal fightback after a first half which saw them largely outplayed by the league leaders.
Arsenal’s season had been dogged by dressing-room unrest and five league defeats, looked in danger of imploding completely but inspired by the new captain Cesc Fabregas Gunners displayed some superb team effort to seal all three points.
