Jordi Gomez scored the only goal of the evening to lead Swansea into the Carling Cup fourth round at the expense of 10-man Cardiff as a feisty all-Welsh affair at the Liberty Stadium finished 1-0 to the home side.

The Bluebirds, who lost Stephen McPhail after two bookable offences, were left to rue a host of wasted first half opportunities as Roberto Martinez’s men edged a frenetic derby clash.

Gomez’s curled a 20-yard free kick past Cardiff keeper Peter Enckelman after 57 minutes to give the Swansea faithful bragging rights in the first competitive encounter between the sides since April 1999. Swan sea managed to hang on to the lead.
